Venomous Fish Along the Costa Blanca Coast: What You Need to Know This Summer
From your trusted team at SICLINICS
As summer arrives and beach season is in full swing, the Costa Blanca coastline welcomes thousands of sunseekers and swimmers. While the sea offers relaxation and fun, it’s important to stay aware of certain hidden dangers—particularly the spider fish, also known as the greater weever (Trachinus draco), a venomous species found in shallow waters along this region.
What Is the Spider Fish?
The spider fish is a bottom-dwelling marine species with sharp, venomous spines located on its dorsal fin and gill covers. It often buries itself in sandy sea beds near the shore, making it easy for unsuspecting swimmers to accidentally step on it.
Though not aggressive, a sting from this fish can be extremely painful and requires immediate attention.
Symptoms of a Sting
If stung, you may experience:
- Sudden, intense burning pain at the site
- Swelling, redness, and numbness
- In some cases: nausea, dizziness, or mild fever
The pain can be severe and typically begins immediately after contact.
First Aid: What to Do
If you or someone near you is stung by a spider fish:
-
Rinse the wound with clean, fresh water to remove any sand or debris.
-
Immerse the affected area in hot water (between 40–45 °C / 104–113 °F) for 30 to 90 minutes. Heat helps to break down the venom and relieve pain.
-
Do not apply cold compresses – this can worsen symptoms.
When to Seek Medical Attention
- You should see a doctor immediately if:
- The pain remains intense or worsens
- You experience allergic reactions such as difficulty breathing or swelling beyond the sting area
- The sting is located near sensitive areas like the face, eyes, or genitals
How to Avoid Spider Fish Stings
- Wear water shoes when entering the sea, especially on sandy seabeds
- Avoid walking barefoot in shallow, sandy waters
- Never touch or handle unfamiliar fish or marine animals
